The WH-R501 Wheelset by Shimano – An everyday companion at an entry-level price
The Shimano WH-R501 wheelset is a real perennial favourite. For years, these reliable and robust wheels have been inspiring passionate road cyclists in training and in their leisure time – in no small part due to their reasonable price. WH-R501 wheels are based on solid aluminium rims and hubs and have been equipped with a steel freehub, round stainless steel spokes and brass nipples. The sealed, low-maintenance conical bearings are characterised by efficient running and load capacity. Note that road cassettes can only be used on the rear wheel up to 10-speed. On the other hand, the installation of MTB 11-speed cassettes is possible without much fuss.

Angular contact ball bearings of the cup & cone type are superior to sealed cartridge bearings in terms of load carrying capacity, as they distribute lateral and vertical forces better, and thus run particularly smoothly and last a long time. They are also easier to adjust, maintain and replace.
